Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the depth of parents¡¯knowledge, awareness, and attitude towards child oral health. The use of these results were fundamental for developing an oral health education program for parents of children.

Methods: This study was conducted using a survey questionnaire on 206 parents of children who were educated with oral health at preschool child educational facilities in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do from 1 July 2008 to 30 August 2008. The survey consists of 4 questions about personal information, each 11 questions for parents¡¯ knowledge and awareness regarding children¡¯s oral health, and 8 questions for parents¡¯ attitude towards children¡¯s oral health. SPSS (SPSS 14.0 for Windows, SPSS Inc, USA) was used to perform the analysis.

Results: A point converted from the parents¡¯ level of knowledge regarding the dental health turned out to be 7.4 out of a possible 11. In addition, it was found that 75.7% of respondents did not have clear information regarding fluoride. Moreover, 85.4% of respondents did not have accurate information regarding the amount of sugar in a given beverage. The majority of parents(92.3%) said that it was either one for children or contained fluoride as recommended toothpaste for their children. But 66% of respondents said that they had used over half of toothbrush length in amount of toothpaste. It was reported that 83% of children consume some beverages, such as yogurt(42.7%) and milk(33.5%) before going to bed. Most of parents seemed aware of the importance of dental health at child¡¯s age, whereas 41.7% responded that they were not sure if they were well-instructed on how to brush their children¡¯s teeth. Just over half of parents(55.8%) had been advised on how to brush teeth well and 55.1% of them head been given proper information regarding the brushing method from the dentist.

Conclusion: An oral health education program for both children and parents needs to be developed. And, it must contain appropriate and sufficient information regarding dietary management, fluoride and tooth-brushing methods for children¡¯s oral health.
